    How does my terrarium look?

Hey I'm just curious as to what you people think of my terrarium for my 1 year old spider ball python.
    40 G tank

    In my tank:

-under tank heater in the top right hand corner
-water dish in top left hand corner
-75W infa-red heat bulb on the same corner as the UTH
-tall tree hide, he seems to love to climb that thing.
    -half log hide
-Just switched from Aspen shavings to Coconut Fibre to keep that humidity UPPPP.
-corner hide on top of UTH
    -tiger skull and a rock
-also using a thermometer/hygrometer i bought at walmart. I know its not meant for terrariums but it measures the temp and humidity and it seems to work well.
-I put tin foil on the top of the screen to keep the heat in since I was having trouble with that, then I put a towel on top of that so it makes it look a little less ugly.

Some of you might say he's not old enough for a 40G tank but he seemed so cramped in his old 20G tank and he was almost as long as the tank so I just had to upgrade to a 40G, he never shows any signs of stress and never threw up or refused a meal so it seems like he's OK with the new tank. I don't have a thermometer reading his ambient temps... I'm mainly concerned about keeping track of the basking temp, since the tank is pretty big I assume as long as the basking temp is around 90F his cool side of the tank is good enough for him.

Any thoughts? i hope you guys can see these pics.....

Ambient temperature definitely matters, the key you're missing is having a proper temperature gradient. Ambient temps must be proper to insure the snake has options You want to aim for 80-85f ambient, this is important. Too low and you risk respiratory infections, and other problems.

I have the thermometer/hygrometer in his basking area, so as long as the temp is right in the basking area wouldn't the temp be cooler anyways on the opposite side since it's a big tank? If I don't have the heat pad and lamp running 24/7 the temp rapidly drops so as long as I leave both running the basking temp is always around 90F and never does much higher, maybe by 1 degree sometimes. So getting a thermostat doesn't seem like it would be too useful anyways, at least until summer comes around and it gets hot as hell outside, which is almost never since I'm in canada.

You have a couple of options. You can either go with an off/on thermostat like Hydrofarm which is on the cheaper side.

Or you can go with a proportional thermostat like Herpstat, Helix or Vivarium Electronics.
