My Ball Setup
Ok, I was wanting to run my future setup past the experts and see if you guys think it will work!
I was wanting to build I rack, but I'm holding off on that for now since I only have 2 snakes and the most I would want (have time for/afford) is 5 snakes total. So this is what I'm thinking:
- 32 or 41 qt tubs (that seems to be what most people use...?) with locking lids
- Ultratherm UTH's (what size would be most appropriate for the above bins?)
- Spacers to keep bins elevated slightly to allow heat to escape. Most like will place bins on a thriftstore bookshelf. Should heaters sit on aluminum foil, or adhered to the bins using duck tape?
- Keeping snakes in our tarantula room. The room is heated and stays a steady 79-80 degrees. I am assuming it is still best to have an UTH for belly heat/hot spot?
- http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTPR...t/dp/B000NZZG3 <--- This t-stat. I currently have zoomed t-stats on my terrariums, but I've heard bad things about them. I was going to buy 1 hydrofarm t-stat and a power cord, hook (up to 5 identical UTH's) onto power cord and into t-stat.
- Hides/thin layer aspen bedding/water bowls
Sound good/safe/bad/will work/needs tweaking?
I appreciate any and all comments, I'm really still new to this and don't want to injure my snakes or burn my house down. Thanks!

That sounds good but use aluminum foil tape to adhere the UTH - not duct tape! I don't use tubs so I don't know if that size is appropriate, but I do believe I have heard about those sizes a lot, like you have.
I use those thermostats, and they work great for a few snakes. You do need that 90F hot spot for digestion, as you've mentioned. An 80F room is like a herper's dream! (Mine, anyway).
Don't forget two hides; one for the cool end and one for the hot end... may want a few more cluttery things if it is a young snake (they prefer smaller enclosures), as well as a water dish of course!
Sounds like you have everything under control. All the best, and look forward to some photos of your snake!

Forgot to add: get a UTH that covers roughly 1/4-1/3 of the tub. May have to use your discretion here.

Thank you!!! Yes, our smallest bedroom has become the critter room. I got into snakes and my husband keeps tarantulas, so it works out well!
