    Male and female BP's

When buying a new BP morph, why are the females usually so much more?

My simple take...you need females to make eggs. Eggs = $$$. The more eggs you want, the more females you need. Whereas one male can be put with multiple females.

One male Enchi + one female Spider = a few eggs ($$$).
One male Enchi + 5 female Spiders = a lot more eggs ($$$$$$$$$$$$).

Another thing that may factor in is that breeders tend to hold back females, therefore limiting the supply of females on the market. Lower supply + higher demand = more $$$...

breeders use more females than males. one male may go to 2 or 3 or even 4 females, many breeders set up breeding groups with 2 males and 5 females. thats the first reason, more females are needed.

the second reason is that the genetics of the male will affect a larger number of eggs. this also affects the market, and lowers the price for common single-gene and double-gene males, but it elevates the prices for powerhouse males like lesser killer spinner, and elevates the price for males with a rare and valuable gene like GHI or bamboo.

Yeah, pretty much what they all said - for breeders the females have more value. The good news is you can get really, really wicked males for less than females and spread him around.

That said, I'm not interested in breeding just neat pets. All of my snakes are male, so more bang for my buck. Or, put another way: I have cheap snakes with awesome temperaments that are really cool pets.

Excellent point! I also have some pretty single-gene morph males that aren't breeders, but because of their personalities they're in my go-to group when I need a pretty, chill snake to introduce someone with no snake/reptile experience to the wonderful world of ball pythons.

I agree with everything above, plus females take way longer to sexually mature while a male can be ready to bred in months

    Re: Male and female BP's

What they were saying about powerhouse males is true. A really good breeder female as simple as a pastel can make you some serious money when you have a great male. I picked up a chocolate blast male recently that will go with my crazy looking pastel female to create some amazing chocolate super blasts and make me some moolah. Simple female + power male = amazing offspring.
