    When it's dirty. In tubs I found it easier to use paper towel, it holds humidity and allows for fast cleaning. I also prefer it for breeder females, this guarantee that the females will lay their eggs in the egg box and not anywhere they want in the substrate.

    Now in a natural terrarium I would use a bioactive substrate composed of coconut husk - pointing soil and sand, you can stir it weekly and replace it every several month.
