Although I prefer it this way as well, if the probe is secured it can work other ways.

OP you'll want that ambient temp in the cage around 80F throughout with your hot spot around 90F. How are you measuring the hot spot? (Simply the UTH isn't enough, you'll also want a probed thermometer, stuck in place with a dab of hot glue to the glass).

Glass tanks unfortunately don't hold much heat or humidity - I've had them before as well, but overall enjoyed them - so I'd suggest a 50W or so red bulb to bump the ambient temps. You can also get straight up heat bulbs, which might work better. Both options must be kept on 24/7 so there is no nighttime drop in temperatures.
