Hey all! So I'm a new ball python owner, just got my first one (a hatchling) almost a week ago from LLLReptile. Everything's been going great, except the past two nights I've woken up to the sound of a loud gurgling noise coming from my snake's bin. He'll make the noise twice and then by the time I get over to the tank 10 seconds later he stops. But when I reach him he looks perfectly normal.
The first night it happened was also the first night he pooped so after doing research on here I thought maybe that was just the noise of him farting, but then it happened again last night too. He hasn't thrown up at all, and I looked for mucus in his mouth and didn't find anything. I also can't hear him when he breathes (I don't hear a gurgling or whistling or wheezing noise at all) so I'm not so sure it's a respiratory infection which some topics on this site seemed to point to. He's acting normally from what I can tell; he isn't gazing up at the top of his tank or anything.
My setup seems fine, I think. I have him in a Sterilite bin with two UTHs (the thermostat for my apartment only goes up to 74 degrees so his cool side wouldn't have been warm enough) that are both attached to separate thermostats. The cooler side is usually around 81 while the hotter side is around 91. The humidity is usually 55-60. When he made the loud gurgling noise last night the humidity was at 62 which is slightly over what seems to be recommended but it doesn't seem like that should be a major cause...? I also have the usual hide on both sides of the bin and I'm using aspen bedding.
What do you guys think? Could this be a respiratory infection in its early stages? Or is this the humorous sound of snake farting that I've read so much about? Or is this something else completely? Regardless I'm going to keep a close eye on him. Thank you in advance!![]()
