A few of my rat racks

Hey everyone. Just thought I'd post a few pics for those of you that are curious about my racks for my rats. I have changed over to a newer design and think it will make my job a lot easier and more efficient. Anyway, here they are. Hope they can inspire some newbies to make the venture into rat breeding, and hopefully the pictures help them figure out which way they wanna go...

More are being built right now and close to done but these are the ones up and running. You can see the difference between the old style on the right and the new on the left. No more filling water bottles!

Btw the cards are sticky waterproof dry erase stickers for any notes we need to jot down on a particular tub.

Thank you very much! Ya rat racks aren't exactly the most fashionable items but I try to make em look professional at least.

And ya that was kinda a funny little gift for my wife nicole. She likes breeding eats and rabbits and I like the snakes. A marriage made in heaven lol

Nice racks! I hate filling water bottles but I am so paranoid about flooded tubs and clogged lines that I can't bring myself to switch to a watering system. With the water bottles, I know everything is working when I walk away. After seeing a flooded tub full of dead/soaked pups at a reptile shop I am scarred.

I like how clean your racks look, amazing what white paint can do lol. I actually just went back to bottles about 6 months ago. Oddly that has become a peaceful part of my day now...who would have thought filling rat water bottles could be cathartic.

Ya I worry about floods too. I got freedom breeders newest and best sippers tho. They are designed to not get packed with bedding because of their tapered design and have a spring return to make them even safer.

It would be more therapeutic and relaxing if I wasn't so bogged down with responsibilities. Caring for almost 40 snakes now, half of which are adult retics, burms, anacondas and boas, along with the rabbits and rats. I think I have surpassed the hobby level of animal chores and have moved into the needing a part time employee range haha.

Re: A few of my rat racks

Got a few cages and a decent sized hutch but I just ordered 2x three bay breeding systems with built in feeders, patented watering system, breeding stock consisting of New Zealand Whites, Californians, Rex, and Beveren breeds. Some pure and some hybrids.

Awesome! I love new racks. I'm thinking about building a new rack soon. I hate mine. I had a friend build mine and the tubs don't slide smoothly and some tubs are prone to falling off the track if I'm not careful.

As for floods, just don't fill the gravity reservoir to the max. I don't mind filling them more often. It still beats water bottles. But at least I know my rats won't drown, if not get a little wet.

I had a flood once because a tub from the upper level fell off the track. The rats chewed up the water line and flooded the bottom tub. But there wasn't enough water to completely drown them. It only turned their tub to a wet sewage marsh. Pups were dirty and covered in poopy water and I had to bathe each one of them. All of the adults were 100% fine though. The bedding was thick enough to keep them above the water.

Re: A few of my rat racks

A thick layer of really absorbent substrate could be the answer to flooding relief
