If you have a real mechanic (grease monkey) friend, ask them to show you.
If they classify themselves as a "tech" then forget it.

Even a computer geek you know might be able to help you out.

A cheap iron will cost you about $20 and usually comes with a little solder. In the long run you will get ahead.
