Qs for those that have a freezer for their f/t feeders
Hey guys,
I'm about to order more f/t rodents for my growing collection and wanted to ask those that use a separate freezer a couple questions. We are considering getting one, just to save storage space in our "normal" freezer but the catch is that we currently live in an apartment and would have to put it in the animal room which would be on carpet. We are also planning on moving this year into a house. Something else I've considered is that the smaller units (2-5 cu. ft.) are crazy expensive for their size (usually $200 and up). I wouldn't even be considering buying one right now, except that we are planning on getting a boa and bigger snakes = bigger prey = less space for our food in the freezer... It also limits how many months supply I can order now.
My questions for you guys:
1. What size freezer do you use for your f/t and is it "sole purpose"?
2. Would it be better to wait and get a larger unit when we have a house? (I am planning on breeding my own rats down the line, but not on a large scale and plan to stay under 10 snakes)?
3. If you have a freezer and have it inside, do any of you keep it on carpet and were there any complications?
Thanks so much for your time and help!

I believe mine is a 4.7 cubic foot freezer, it was like ~250 with free home delivery and two year protection plan for free servicing.
Ours is dual use, theres half frozen rodents and half frozen foods inside.
You'll end up saving money per cubic foot if you bought a larger one, but we're planning on purchasing a second one later on to compensate the small one. So, it's really up to you.
Ours is outside in the garage, and it's almost been a year having it, and there hasn't been any leakage or anything onto the floor.

Re: Qs for those that have a freezer for their f/t feeders
We just put one in the herp room, purchased used for $50 from a friend. It's on carpet, no issues so far, but then again it's an old carpet that I don't care about and will be replaced if/when I ever sell the house.
The freezer's exterior dimensions are 36"x21"x33", not sure what the internal cubic footage is. I also found it useful to get some of the freezer baskets to help segregate the bags of smaller rodents - all of the mice from pinkies thru hoppers in one basket, rat pinks thru pups in another, etc. That way I'm not likely to find a bag of freezer-burned pinkies in the bottom of the freezer in a year.

I have this in the basement http://www.walmart.com/ip/GE-7-cu.-f...White/25428422
The sole purpose is to keep f/t rodents.
I keep whatever F/T I have in sterilite container like those http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-...-of-6/20699641 (Size depends of the size of the rodents)

Thanks for your input! I guess I need to figure out what the ideal size for us would be. We will probably end up getting a big chest freezer once we have a garage for it to go in, but having a smaller dedicated one for f/t wouldn't hurt.
Here are some I'm looking at that will fit in the space I have. If you have any thoughts on size, etc. please feel free to share.
Walmart 3.6 cu ft. $119
Walmart 5 cu. ft. $169
Amazon 3.6 cu ft. $169

I've actually got two freezers both about 5 cu ft. One I got from some appliance store and one I got for free from a neighbor. Both are dedicated to rodents however my wife will usually store food that doesn't fit in our regular freezer. The one I bought has easily paid for itself several times over from the money I saved being able to buy in bulk.

Thanks for your input MarkS.
I'm leaning towards the smaller freezers... We just have so little space right now. I think one of the 3.6 cu ft. freezers will be big enough for my needs at the moment.

check Craigslist or your local classifieds. you can usually find used freezers pretty cheap.

Thank you for your advice!
Well, I have had an unexpected turn of events... After talking with my mother, I have been advised to hold off on getting a freezer until after we move (we'll be house shopping soon). She gave me permission to store some of my frozen rodents in her large chest freezer (given some interesting guidelines) until such time as we can buy one of our own after we buy a house.
She did suggest that I avoid the front-opening ones due to door closing issues and leakage.
When I do move, I will either get a 3.5 or 5 cu. ft. chest-style freezer.
Thank you all for your help and advice!
