Same reason amazon.com isn't about the largest river in the world it's a site that sells underwear and weight sets.

It's amusing at first - people dig it and say stuff like "nice looking camel"; but then other camel people start coming out of the woodworks. Catastrophe is upon you, while you were looking the other way your pretty pony forum became a safe haven for spitting camel cameos. To avoid this unsavory scenario, the smart admin creates sub categories for people to share their various interests. These categories seldom, if ever, get larger than the primary one so there really is no need for a domain name change like you suggest. If it bothers you, you do have the option to bookmark just the forum(s) in which you're interested.
Now this was funny.

We've worked hard over the years to make the site appealing to all facets of the herping community and I, for one, find it very gratifying to know that some members enjoy the site without a particular interest in ball pythons.
To answer the original question...
When the site was started over ten years ago, it's sole focus was ball pythons. That was the intent of the original creator and the dozen or so folks who kicked it off. But ball python enthusiasts also love other snakes, other reptiles, and ultimately, other animals. Early on, when the new ownership took over (me and three others) we worked on broadening the site's mission, giving the community a safe place to come and learn how to take care of their reptiles...not just ball pythons.
The site's reputation and "brand" were already solid and growing deeper roots into the community on a daily basis. There was no desire or need to change the name. And, we're still happy to have our main focus on ball pythons, since that is a "first herp" for many, many people...and, like it or not, it is a HUGE part of the overall herping community.
So yeah....we're BP.net....and we're proud of it!
Wow 10 years that's older then most of the snakes on this site.
It always cracks me up to see the same people who are always so fast to belittle a new member for doing something wrong. In turn are the same ones running around crying about this thread.

To the OP. I wondered the same thing myself. kingsnake.com is another one. I figured that it started about bps and grew. after a while you'll notice this is kind of like a family. There are cliques and people argue. Newbies will inevitably ask questions that have been answered a million times. There will always be the jerks who will make themselves feel superior by making them feel dumb. There will always be those willing to offer advice even if its readily available in another thread. There will always be the moms...i mean MODS, that will put us in timeout when we get out of line.
If anything, this should be called thehumongousdysfunctionalfamilyofherploversandweirdos.net
ooh, idea for new thread!
