Re: hets and aggression poll
Hi,
Actually that's almost the exact opposite of what they found during the experiments on the silver fox in a 50 year experiment in russia.

http://www.brighthub.com/science/gen...les/46555.aspx
Intrestingly it also brought with it unexpected physical changes that we see in dogs such as shorter legs, differing coat patterns etc.
Quite a facinating study overall.

Re: hets and aggression poll
My 1.1 het clowns that I got last fall are both hissers. Neither has bit or struck at me, and they have gotten better with time, but neither are the nicest. And I just got a new het clown female today who is a bit nippy.
My normal female and my lesser male are super docile and fantastic.
So based on my limited anecdotal evidence... I voted yes.

Re: hets and aggression poll
I have het pieds, het clowns and het caramels. They are all no different than my other BPs. I was struck at by JKs little het pied once but he was just hungry
Only one of my BPs could be considered agressive and I believe she is just nervous all the time. My het clowns are very calm and relaxed compared to some of the other BPs that are not hets. I believe it just depends on each individual snake.

Re: hets and aggression poll
My 1.1 het albinos are my two nippiest snakes, but I also have 4 possible het albino females and they are really sweet snakes.
My 2 100% hets are also incredibly timid, and poor feeders, so their hissy attitudes and strikes are due to this (far as i can see).
Het clowns... sweet, but timid feeders.
4 het orange hypo females are all nippy, but because they have such strong feed responses. They are tracking me for two days after each feed. If I open a tub too fast they tend to come snapping out at me (I try to remember to peer in first and see who is poised in strike mode - but sometimes forget).
4 possible het orange hypos, all are sweet sweet sweet angels in snake suits.
So either I vote no. Or I accept that all my P-hets are just sweet normals.

Re: hets and aggression poll
I only have 2 hets in my collection (100% albinos), and they aren't really aggressive... but the boy was a striker when he was young, and the girl has been dubbed "Miss Hissy-Pants" for her attitude. She never strikes, but will hiss & puff up a storm! So while I don't have much of a control group, I'll say my hets are generally less nice than my other snakes.
Lolo's Collection...

3.4 Corn Snakes, 1.1 Western Hognose Snakes, 1.2 cats, and 1.0 dog (47lb mutt)

Re: hets and aggression poll
I have noticed no difference at all with my two het pieds and my het ghost. I think it all boils down to the individual snake.
I started a similar thread a short while back about mojaves and aggression. Both of mine want to tear my face off all the time, while other people say theirs are tame as can be. On a side note...I was tagged by a super mojave at the show this weekend! : )
Just my thoughts,

I dont really have a lot of XP with hets, yet. But I tend to agree that aggro can be caused by both, genetic and enviromental influances. Just like any other animal. You can breed aggro into or out of any animal. Look at fighting dogs, and bucking horses, which are selectivly breed to do their job. But that being said you could also lock up and abuse "sweet" dog and create a mean dog. With some of the gene pools being so small it is quite possible that some morphs may have genetic predisposition to be aggresive.

Re: hets and aggression poll
I got two het albinos on September 19 I got my female from a big breeder and to this day she has never stopped trying to bite the heck out of me. But on the other side I got my male from a small breeder that claims to hold them all and he is so nice and melo I can't believe I got them the same day.
Ps. I just finished cleaning out her tub she struck at me like 30+ times.

Re: hets and aggression poll
My het pied us one of my most chill snakes. My possible het pied isn't noticeably different from any of the others. These are my only hets so far, not including the co-doms.
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.
