Breeding rats that are "pet only"
I got some rats from a pet breeder and the breeder said they were not for breeding only because the breeder doesn't "agree" with breeding. Nothing is wrong with the rats.
I want to use them to start off my lines... (along with the babies I got from a feeder breeder)
Would you breed them or agree to the breeder's request?
The breeder was clearly not a good one... They said the rats were dumbo and they are all standard ears. Also they got the markings wrong.
1 Husband, 1 Western Hognose Snake (male), 2 ferrets (2 females), 1 male jungle leopard gecko, 4 gerbils (2 females & 2 males), 1 male dwarf rabbit, 3 guinea pigs (1 male, 1 female and 1 female skinny pig), 2 American parakeets, 2 cats (male bobcat hybrid and a male Egyptian Mau mix), and 2 dogs (female Mini Dachshund and a female Alaskan Malamute).

I am so confused, he breeds but is against breeding? I am forced to assume you mean breeding for feeders. One side of me says to respect the breeders wishes, the other side says that they are your rats do with them as you wish.

Seems like a logic fail to me. "Breeding rats is both good and bad simultaneously." Breed them if you want to .

No I mean against breeding period. They breed feeders as well as pets. They just don't agree with other people breeding. A lot of the pet rat community is like that.

So he does not like competition. In that case I would have no concern for his wishes. He has no care about the health and or keeping of the animals just wants to make sure he can keep making his $$.

The way I see it, once you purchase something it is yours to do with as you please so long as state/federal laws are being followed. If this breeder can't tell the difference between dumbo and standard then they are sub par and have no business telling you not to breed the rats. I know what you mean about the rat community, though. There are "no breeding" contracts everywhere!

If they're that bad, why do you want that blood? Find a good breeder and get good stock.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

Re: Breeding rats that are "pet only"
Just tell the guy ya ya I only want them as pets, and go along with your day. You aren't renting or leasing them so breed away. Unless he has you sign a legally binding contract, or you are breaking laws, there is nothing wrong with breeding them.
Hope you enjoy breeding them rats!
