Breeding normal male, het for pied question
So I got a normal male ball from a guy who was downsizing and he said it was a het for pied that he had bought as a hatchling (no parents to prove it). Someday, with ok from the hubby I'd love to breed him. Is it worth the investment in a pied (keeping in mind I'm not exactly rich so it would require at least saving for a year) to get a pied female and see without proof if he carries the gene or should I aim for a lower cost morph that I know should produce at least some of the females morph?

You could look at getting another Het Pied and shoot for a chance of a Pied to try to prove him out. Heres your odds if you were to breed a Normal Het Pied x Normal Het Pied: 25% |
1/4 |
Normal |
50% |
2/4 |
Het. Piebald |
25% |
1/4 |
Piebald |

Re: Breeding normal male, het for pied question
unfortunately that male is not worth breeding since you do not know he is truly 100% het pied.
you can get male het pieds for almost nothing now and you can get a variety of codom het pieds for a little bit of nothing too.
wouldn't make any sense to get a het or a visual female and raise them up for a few years to breed to what could very well be a normal male.

if you buy a female het pied hatchling now, and a male visual pied 1 year later, that would be cheaper compared to getting a female pied now. even getting two female het pieds, and one year later a male pied, would probarbly still be cheaper.
males are cheaper than females, because you can breed one male to several females. but because one male contributes to more clutches than any of the females, you should make sure that this one male is genetically more powerful and more advanced than any of the females. otherwise you end up paying more than you have to pay, for exactly the same results. female breeders are the expensive part of the equation, they make the eggs, the job of the male is to make sure that the content of these eggs is as nice as possible and that the females are properly utilized.
i hate to break your plans, but: the male is quite useless. you would not want to breed a male het pied to a female pied unless the male het pied has some nice extra genes that you want to bring into visual pieds. and if you dont want to make use of the male being het pied, generally you dont want to breed a male normal to any morph. even breeding a male het pied to a female het pied is questionable, you could use a male visual pied or a male het pied with extra genes.
that is all under the assumption that he actually is het pied. he is a possible het pied.
Aaaand.... its a pet i hope you still love him and that finding out that he isnt breeding material does not change how you view your pet python. and that he will continue to be a great pet for you

a couple years ago, I picked up 2 hatchling female hets for $200 at a show. You can probably find one for around $100, then have a very minimal investment to try to make pieds.
the male is not worth much (heck I sold an adult for $5 so I did not have to keep feeding it, and he was mean )
if your goal is to have pets and a small hobby, that is fine. True if you were trying to get the most money you would want a better male, but now it is getting hard to make money on balls with prices dropping and more people doing it. In my mind, keep it hobby, and don't count on making money.

What the others said, pretty cheap to replace him with a for sure pied gene male.
However, you might take a quick look around for an unbreed fat and healthy normal female in your area. If you can pick one up for next to nothing you could get some experience yet this winter trying to breed them (assuming the male is at least 500 grams already). If he has good belly markers you could hold back the daughters with the belly markers. Still not as sure as buying 100% hets but might be a lot of fun and if all goes very well you might have several females for next to no investment (other than your time). Not the best business plan but if you like to gamble could be a fun experience.
FYI I've lost track of how many possible het pied females I've proven picked based on the belly markers so if your guy has good ones I'd go for it.

If u want to prove the male out then just get a female pied buy her young u can one from 400-600 ... if ur male isn't het at least the whole clutch would be .. I believe .. for u to buy another visual morph female that is het u would be just wasting money cause u have no idea if ur male is deff het .. and a visual female morph het pied will cost u about the same as a female pied .. if u got face book check out Ben Siegel he has auctions all the time and i see a lot of pied go for around 400$... worse case scenario u get a beautiful pied to add to ur collection and if ur het doesn't prove out u can always throw a baby back at mom to shoot for more
1.1 het pied ,1.1 pastel,1. butter, .1 spider , .1 fire ph ghost , .1 pastave
