Impossible to tell if the rat is too big without the snake in the same pic. Generally if it is the same width as the snake, you are fine. Ball pythons really get put off when their food sniffs back! As long as he shows interest I would leave the rat in but do not leave them unsupervised! A lve rat can seriously harm or kill your snake!
How big is your male and are you 100% certain about sex? This time of a year a lot of males aren't eating.
Ball pythons: 1.0 Pied, 0.1 Normal het Pied, 1.0 Spider, 0.1 Russo het Luc
Domestic cats: 0.1 Misty, 0.1 Tootsie, 0.1 Oreo
Hooded Striped rats: 1.0 General Tso, 1.0 Moo Goo, 0.1 Lo, 0.1 Chow
Dalmation Dumbo rats: 0.1 Sesame

Re: Won't take the bait
I just have a crappy scale. Not digital, so I'm not confident on his weight, but between 400-450 grams. That was a couple weeks ago. And no, I'm not sure that he is male. Lol!
They aren't unattended. I've been sitting there watching for almost 2 hours now.
