It's not illegal unless its for entertainment purposes that you're feeding it live.
It is highly frowned upon tho so if you ask for a rat or mouse just say you are looking for a pet

They might get suspicious if you have to buy a new pet rat each week.
Although I have read on the forum where members in the US were refused rats at pet stores because they were to be pet rats. I know people do keep them as pets but a snake has to eat.
I had a pet cow as a kid. I'm glad I don't follow their thinking.

Yeh I hear ya on that, it would look suspicious. I would just walk in and ask for a rat... honestly I shouldn't be questioned why I want to buy it...
Don't understand how ya can buy a snake and not be able to buy the proper food.
I've talked to several pet stores around my local area. One of the petsmarts, the employees got freaked out and told me the frozen rats were in the freezer. Another Petsmart I was told that they put a medicine on the rats for fleas that would kill a snake. And Petco didn't care either way, just prefer to give the albinos as feeders and keep the colored to sell as pets.
As for your problem I don't have anything else to add. I had luck getting my ball pythons to swap from asf rats to regular rats by using live smaller rats. Good luck!
