Hey guys I have been looking into bloods for awhile and thinking about getting one for my collection soon. I came here to ask you guys about good, trusted online blood breeders where I should look and possible order, for i dont know of any! Also, opinions on owning bloods are welcome! I currently have a ball and a boa so im wondering what differences they have

Kara from bloodpythons.com is kind of a species figure head in my mind. There are quite a few breeders that regular in this forum if you just keep your eye out.

As far as opinions?

I've had mine for almost 2 years now. It's a love/hate relationship. 95% love 5% hate. It's mostly because all of my reptile loving friends are terrified of her, and no one in my family is very fond of her either. She's my oversized breakfast sausage of love. I've found that mine at least has good and bad days. If she is already in a bad mood, just working her won't calm her like it would a BP or RTB. I just leave her be on those days. Most are going to take some consistent and gentle handling to get to a lovable lump of a snake personality. Not sure if all STP are this way, but mine is very hissy. I just have to touch her and she hisses. She hates my hair, and if she crawls over it she'll hiss then, too! She's a big weenie and I find it funny when she hisses, now.

Remember they are not arboreal and I cannot stress this enough. The way I explain it to people who want to hold her is 'She does not understand up'. Support as much of her as you can, and expect her to just GO and assume there's going to be something to catch her. Try to handle a couple short tails before getting your own!

They're going to cost you food wise, as well. I decided to only feed mine once every 7 days as opposed to 5, and she is pounding medium rats and still looking for more. Funny feed related story. I fed her the other day by holding a rat by it's tail with some forceps. She struck it so hard it's tail stayed behind with me.

Checking this forum to see who's producing what isn't a bad idea. If you're looking for red bloods (P. brongersmai) in particular, I would second Kara, but will also add Kevin Marter, VPI, Selective Origins, CBE, RepTillis (just bought from them at Tinley and had nice morphs)... I know there's more, but those just popped into my head. I do have a Marter girl and she is stunningly red. I hope to get some Bankas from Kara one of these days, also - along with the rest of my wish list. I just need to sell the condo and move to an actual house.

Oh, and as far as differences, I have mostly ball pythons and a pair of Dumerils. I started with balls in '96 and bloods I think in 2002. Compared to balls, they have much more personality and seem much more aware of what's going on around them. They do tend to be defensive as babies, but also usually grow out of it. They also need access to clean water all the time. They drink a lot, and they pee a lot! Higher humidity and/or access to a large enough dish for soaking is pretty important as babies. As previously mentioned, they are quite the talkers. I do educational events with a couple of my bloods. They are quite the hissers, but will do so when being handled while still being relaxed. They are usually quite food motivated and are much more easy to handle once they are out. I currently have 8 red bloods, a pair of Sumatran Short Tails (black bloods) and an unknown (maybe a cross between a Borneo and SST) who is a pet only.

As far as differences between them, I've noticed that the SSTs seem to need higher humidity and are much quicker striking at prey while the reds sometimes just casually go up to their rats and eat them. The SSTs are generally smaller, and mine as babies weren't as defensive. Besides the 'smaller' part, these comments are just from observation.

I highly recommend them. They are very beautiful, impressive snakes, but aren't as active and for their size don't require huge caging. Generally, a 4' x 2' is perfect for an adult female. I use those for adults, and the younger ones are in racks.

I currently have 4. They are great snakes but you need to be prepared for a blood. They are extremely strong and grow fast.

My young three were pretty nippy when young but have settled down nice. But if your getting a young one you need to be ready to get tagged a few times until they learn your alright. I would be holding mine without issue then suddenly then would just turn their head and chomp on me. It was actually kinda funny. It was as if they were testing me. After a few weeks though they are great.

All of mine(like already said) are very vocal. They huff and puff constantly and are general just heavy breathers, meaning many times you can here them breath but they are not hissing.

If just think your ball is lazy. A blood will teach you the real meaning of the word. I have to poke mine just to make sure they are alive. They will move for food but slowly. They just come up to it and start to swallow it. Other than that they will be right where I left them.

I really like handling mine because they are very content just sitting in your lap or hanging around my neck. They are not like my others that are always moving about. My big girl is a tad over 5.5 ft and is nice in thick. She will sometimes protest going back in her cage and I could see how she could be a real hand full to a smaller person. I also keep my adults in 4x2 and young ones in a rack.

When they say they drink and pee a lot they mean ALOT! That and they take a dump like a baby elephant. Most the time its larger than my 70lb bulldog.
