New to snakes
Hi I'm relatively new to the world of snakes but have always been fascinated by them. Now I just want to learn and know everything about them, so I may be posting a lot of questions especially about behavioural, such as the New Brunswick case involving two children and a rock python I always thought snakes only killed to eat not to kill can someone explain this please. I understand that these are aggressive snakes. I will research further and learn where to post questions and statements I'm just running out of time at the Starbucks I have no internet at home thankyoup

It's common knowledge that snakes generally kill to eat. That case in particular raised many red flags in the snake community. Not sure if it were rumors or not, but the man that owned the snakes was subsequently charged for murder. Haven't heard much since hearing that rumor though, so I can't 100% confirm it.

New to snakes
Ya, do everyone a favor and take everything in the news media concerning snakes with a grain of salt.
The case was officially changed to a homicide investigation, citing that the snake was not found to be the cause of death of the two boys.
The evidence never even pointe to the snake, but peoples fears of snakes automatically led them to assume the worst of the animal.
Does it make sense to you that a +100lb, +14' snake would crash through the ceiling, NOT wake up all 3 children present in the room, or the adult in the same house, constrict and kill not one, but two boys, and no scream, no signs of a struggle, no apparent bites, no internal organ damage etc was found?
It was fishy from the start, and stunk of foul play. I hope the judicial process finds the person/persons guilty of the death of those two boys.
A more intelligent creature with opposable thumbs was behind the death of those boys.

Re: New to snakes
The 3 children were just that children. None of them big or strong enough to carry a 100+ lbs snake. To my understanding the snake was looking for warmth and smothered the children, not actually constricted them. But again I haven't followed up on the case for myself.
Regardless I don't think we should be accusing anyone as of right now, least of all the parents who just lost their kids.

I refuse to believe one snake simultaniously smothered multiple children children in their sleep because it was seeking warmth. Unless it draped across all of their mouths at once and not one scream could be made, someone would have heard what happened and prevented their deaths. Something very fishy and wrong happened in that place and a snake is being blamed, adding fuel to the ridiculous fire that all constrictors are dangerous/should be banned/ritually sacrificed.

Re: New to snakes
After a quick Google search I'm struggling to find any update last September. In fact the article on it being a smother and not asphyxiation isn't popping up either.
That being said, I've never seen a constrictor constrict without striking. No bite marks is peculiar, but how could they falsify a snake escaping and crashing through the roof. It couldn't have just been coincidence, and if I wasn't comfortable around snakes and saw a huge animal like that, my first thought wouldn't be let me strangle these kids and blame it on the snake.
I just believe it's still relatively early to be pointing the finger at anyone, human or reptile.

You're right about the opposable thumbs, but the jury's still out on "more intelligent."

It IS theoretically possible that the snake could have fallen through the ceiling and landed on them. In that case, it could also have essentially grabbed both of them in a coil or two and held on for dear life. Terrestrial snakes are not big fans of falling, and they'll grab anything handy to stop a fall. However, the chances of that being what happened here are about the same as your odds of winning the lotto... Without buying a ticket. Even if it DID somehow defy the laws of probability, these boys were described as "suffocated," NOT "strangled." There's an enormous distinction between the two.

Re: New to snakes
An important point to any of these theoretical situations...
If the snake did not actually constrict, but rather landed on them and smothered them, and the boys were sleeping on the floor, and a 100lbs snake landed on them, with debris from the ceiling accompanying the snake, why did the coroners report show any signs of trauma? 100lbs snake falls from 8ft or more on tiny children and no damage? Just asphyxiation?

Well, just for a second, let's pretend that the snake magically floated down and gently came to rest on the faces of these two kids...
Ok, that still sounds ridiculous. I'm actually offended by the fact that someone thinks I'm dumb enough to believe that a 100lb snake dropping onto someone wouldn't wake them up, AND that they would continue sleeping as they were suffocated. Despite the fact that a snake this size could possibly kill a kid, there's no way in hell there wouldn't have been a loud, violent struggle.
