My kingsnake hasn't eaten in months...

I got a kingsnake back in april, about six months ago. I was told when I got him that he was "at least" a year old, but he's already over 5 feet long. He used the best eater, he ate about 3 mice every two weeks, Sometimes even 2 mice once a week. But he hasn't eaten in at least 6 weeks, maybe more. His lighting and heating set-up has not been changed much, except I switched him from a red heat lamp to a ceramic heat emitter.

Re: My kingsnake hasn't eaten in months...

Is it a cali king snake?

With it being over 5 feet, it's most likely 3+ years old. Some colubrids will stop eating to hibernate or brumate for the winter. My cali king, albino black rat snake, and one BP all stop eating around early/mid October and do not start eating again until Feb/Mar. I shut the lights/heat off for the king and rat snakes to help them with their cycle. I'll offer food to my rat snake in mid January cause he likes a mid season snack.

Track his weight, if he doesn't lose weight drastically you should be in good shape.

Re: My kingsnake hasn't eaten in months...

My Cali Kings, MBK, and adult garter all went off food a few weeks ago as well, though they're still acting normal and maintaining their weight. They did eat last year but they were babies. My juvenile milk and garter snakes are still garbage guts though.

Yes, he is a Cali King, and thanks for all the good info! It's good to know that he's probably just hibernating.

This post covered the answer you are looking for perfectly! Make sure to weigh him to ensure nothing out of the ordinary is going on. And snake definitely is much older than they originally told you...

And definitely keep offering food, my older garter finally took a f/t pinky and my Cali king took a live mouse this past weekend after being off food for four weeks.

Yeah, whenever I see him getting active in his enclosure, I've been offering him food, but he still hasn't eaten. No weight loss though! Thanks again for all the help guys.
