new and in need of advice. please help.

I'm possibly buying a 2800 gram female proven het albino that may also be het pied. The guy I'm getting her from said she hooked up to his male pied three times so far and she should be good to go. Its december 11th today. I gues she hooked up three times in one week last week. Is this enough? Should I keep breeding her till feb/march? The problem is I have no pied males and he is moving away next week so do you guys think she's good to go or do I need to find a stud?

It's impossible to say if she is pregnant or not. If you want a guarantee, you'll have to keep trying. Hopefully you can find another pied.

Just remember if you do pair her with something other than visual pied you wont be able to claim the normal hatchlings are poss het pied. The problem with a double sire clutch when recessive is involved. It could only take one lock to make a female go. But it can also take more. Its all kind of up in the air...

    Good luck to you.

as i gather it there are two ways:

one is to just keep trying and trying until she really is developing eggs.

the other, used by some advanced breeders, is to use ultrasound machines to regularly measure the follicle size. then you only pair when the follicle size is just right. its really advanced, because the machine is expensive and using it to get correct measurements of follicle size takes skill and experience.

both strategies seem valid, because some of the really big and professional breeders use one way and others use the other way.

Even if you ultrasound and see follicles it's no guarantee that she will ovulate and lay viable eggs. Here are your best options as I see them if you get her:

    A. Do nothing, she might lay fertile eggs from the pied male. There are examples on the forum of females who have retained sperm for 12 months or more, having been paired so recently her odds aren't that long.

    B. If you want to prove her out as het pied, either take option A or get a visual pied male to go with her and continue pairing until she lays (or doesn't, they do what they want to do, not what we want them to do).

    C. If you don't care about proving her out as het pied, use a male with some kind of non-recessive super genes (super pastel, super fire etc.) so you'll be able to tell which babies are his in the event of a dual sired clutch.

    D. Use any male you want (I would vote albino if selecting this option), but any wild type (visually normal) babies cannot be sold as hets (other than 50% pos het albino on mom's side).

So would I increase my chances by allot I'd I keep breeding her? She hooked up four times to that male. But is it to early in the season to stop breeding?

It's impossible to say either way, if I even tried to guess the odds I'd just be making stuff up. She might be just fine with the locks that have already taken place, she might get stressed from moving and not lay at all. It's really up to her.
