    I use a UTH to maintain the basic ambient temp more than a hot spot and an infra-red lower watt bulb to provide a hot spot on my guys in glass tanks with no trouble. If the bulb blows while I am at work the tank temps are kept within reason by the UTH.
    But, if your home is reasonably warm and you keep spare bulbs on hand I can't see any reason why you need to change anything. And, to be honest if heating was totally taken care of other ways I would still be looking for an ultra-low watt Infra red just to watch them at night just before feeding days when they cruise the tank like they are on a rat killing mission.
