Paper substrate absorbency?

Tried to get some of the unused newspaper rolls from my local paper. Unfortunately they already have aaa contract to sell all of it to a vendor. They did give me 2 rolls of white paper that seems like the same weight as copy paper. It reminds me of the stuff school teachers use for art projects or banners.

Have any of you used this instead of newspaper? Is it absorbent enough?

I have used this before, my ex's father worked for the newspaper, and I found that having it in 3 layers was perfect. Great at absorbing liquid and did not create a smell at all. Also it was super easy to clean out and cut my cleaning time in half from using paper towels and by even more over aspen or anything like that.
