    Feeling your UTH is not a proper way to measure temperature, your idea of hot is not the snakes idea of hot. Is it controlled with a thermostat? Do you have an IR thermometer to measure the surface temps? Thats how you should be doing it. As for a red spot, or orange as you say? Got pics? could be a number of things.
