Water works for dislodging a snake, ive also heard hydrogen peroxide works too. Personally, I think I'd only ever try water-- its natural for them to get a faceful of water occasionally, but I wouldn't want to risk chemical malfunctions with the other options.

Many times they will let go on their own though, as long as it's a defensive tag. If it's hunger, it may take a few moments for them to figure out you aren't food. (And if you already smell like rat, head to the sink now, because that guy thinks you're dinner! Lol)
