Weird looking scale.

Ok I dont have a picture so i dont know how much you guys can help me. But. Jojo has a scale on his left side kind of in the middle of his body. It looks maroon in color is kind of translucent. I noticed it on friday but figured since he was about to shed i would wait to see if it went way. Well Jojo shed today and had a perfect complete shed but i checked that scale and it was still there. Again its maroon in color and kind of translucent. Has anyone else had this.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, without a picture it's hard to say, but it sounds like a very mild case of scale rot. How damp is the substrate in Jojo's cage? Make sure if you mist the cage or anything like that, that the actual substrate doesn't stay wet. Would you be able to get a picture of it? By translucent, you mean, see-through? That's really weird. Maybe someone else can help you with that (and it could never hurt to see the vet about it if you are concerned).

But all in all, I would say off hand that it sounds like beginning scale rot.

I'm new to the site but I've read enough of Jen's replies to know shes a smart cookie and I also second that it could be the beginning stage of scale rot I see it in all the wild snakes I catch and thats what the first stage looks like and it gets nastier from there on in bud. Do as Jen says check the substrate in the tank and make sure its not wet. As for the see-through i don't know where thats coming from but if you could post pics that would help wonders when was it your snake last shed it could probably just be that the former skin was retained in that one spot and thats whats giving it that see-through like apperance. All in all it wouldn't hurt if you took Jojo to the Vet.

Ok so I finally got a picture of that scale.

Its that dark scale.

It brings to mind a blood-blister...a tiny injury that caused blood to pool underneath a scale. However, I have NO idea if that's even possible with snakes, that's just what the picture looks like to me. If it were me, I'd just keep a close eye on it. At the first sign of it seeming to spread or get worse, I'd head to the vet.

It doesnt seem to hurt him or bother him i will wait a couple of sheds if it doesnt spread to see if it goes away on its own. I completely disinfected his enclosure and both hides and a water and bleach mixture and let them dry. Maybe it was environmental?

Ok I went to the place where i got him from they run a pretty good reptile store. It turns out that the dark scale was actually A TICK!!!!!!!! Its really weird because it looked just like a normal scale. If anyone sees this take your BP to the vet ASAP.
