I voted corn snake, but I think it depends. As a first snake and a snake for a child, a corn snake has been perfect for us. All of my kids have a corn snake, and they are a great fit. I also enjoy them and the beautiful morphs we have. However, I have 2 Cal kings, and they are mine. I enjoy their attitudes when taking them out (just tail rattlings and mock striking so far) but they are very chill once in my hands. I could do without the musking ... but they are still young.

When I got my first snake I was SET on a milk snake. I read a bit more into their temperments and whatnot, but what really got me was just their size. I'd rather have a larger snake than a smaller one... no real reason why just easier to hold on to I guess.
Corns have SO many morphs and colours (as do milk snakes), but king snakes I don't find as asthetically pleasing in the end. Also, for where I am, corns were more available from breeders I found.
There is a fantastic forum if you'd like to learn a bit more about corns and the community!

Good luck with whatever decision you make! Either way it'll be great and you'll have to post photos

If you're interested in milk snakes but like a bit of size there are still some options. Here's a link for your viewing pleasure with a few such animals:
