Possible to modify this into a rack?
So, I've been looking into building a rack and have been wondering if it would be at all possible to turn my current metal shelving unit into a rack with some wood? Any input would be awesome!

The only thing I'm not sure about is the depth of the shelves as they are already. The top 2 tubs are 38Q and hang over about 3inches. If I were to transform this, I'd wanna be sure that I could fit 41Q breeding tubs in all the spaces. How would I go about taking each section and splitting it into 2 levels?

actually that would be very easy to turn into a rack, since all of the shelves are adjustable all you would have to do is attach a thin sheet of board to the bottom and possibly the top of each shelf and move the shelves so that they only sit about a half inch off the top of the tubs.

I've heard that melamine isn't the best as it contains formaldehyde?

Just my opinion, but I think by the time you get done messing around with modding that shelf unit to use it as a lidless rack setup you will have just as much effort spent, if not more than, if you just built the rack out of melamine or something. And I have two racks now and will be building two more soon out of melamine. Not the most fun stuff to work with, but I can't find suitable x-pvc in my area.
P.S.- I have the same or close to the same metal shelves setup as a 41qt rack using lids, and it works just fine. I just hate having to deal with the lids, hence the build.

Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

I was thinking of just spending the $60 to buy another rack like this and just using the shelves and sliding them down to a proper height so I can fit more shelves on this one. I'm not a huge fan of lids either, though. However, if it works with lids in the meantime until I can spend the proper time and money into making a GOOD one, then I can't complain. If I did go this route, what type of wood/board would be the best for lining the bottom of the shelves and/or sides?

Re: Possible to modify this into a rack?
Check this out, this is how I have one rack set up. At first I thought the lids were gonna be a pain but it's not. I really like this rack.
