I use paper towel roles too, and actually my BP is around the same age and weight as yours. He coils up super tight, but I really don't think they're stuck.
Nothing to be worried about in my opinion. Snakes are funny, and do weird snake things.
But if you feel better cutting a slit in the roll just incase, keep doing that.

It's pretty amazing the tight spaces they fit into!
