How long to shed?
Hey guys, im new to the forum and new to bloods. Id like to say first that I am completely in love with my boy, he's such a puppy dog and hopefully will get some pics up for you guys soon. But i was wondering how long does it take bloods to complete the whole process of shedding? I've had him for about 4 weeks now and when i bought him the guy who owned him said he was going into shed, that's why he was brown instead of red. I didn't think too much of it at the time because the blood is so tame and I don't mine if he's not going to be super red.
He's definitely got a lot darker since I've had him and he has been soaking for a couple hours the past two days, so do you think it will be soon? I'm used to my little ball python shedding as she only takes a week for her to darken, go blue and shed. He is about 4 years old according to the guy, approx 5 feet long and about 14.6 pounds the last time i weighed him. How long does it take for your guys and girls to shed? =) Thanks in advance!

Mine only takes about 1 to 2 weeks tops... I hope you didn't get swindled by whoever sold you the snake?
I have a yearling, though, so it very well could be different with the adults.

If it's been four weeks...if he was indeed in shed, he should have shed out by now for sure. Maybe he was just telling you that so you'd still by the snake even though it isn't very red?

Re: How long to shed?
Whole process and going into shed.. Borneo bloods for example.. When a shed is complete the fresh belly scales will be white or near white.. As time goes on a peach wash develops and progressively gets stronger in color as the next shed approaches..SO I can say a snake is heading towards a shed 4-6 + weeks out.. BUT, the actual process begins when the body is signaled put out the lubricant that turns the snake "blue" complete with cloudy eyes.. Once this "blueing" lubricant disappears the snake will or should shed in the following 3-4 days..After the clearing of the "blue" is the time when you would wet the cage in order to facilitate a good shed..

He just shed yesterday and your guys' fears are right, they did lie to me about it. I should have known not to buy a snake in "shed". He is the same color now as when i bought him. I was hoping he would at least be sort of orange after the shed but nope, he's brown. Boy am i mad about it! I really trusted these guys too, they even showed me multiple pictures of they guy holding a reddish snake that the guy told me was the said snake! It must have been a completely different animal! Needless to say I will not waste another dollar at that place. He's still a dream to have as a pet and I'm still going to keep him but it still would have been nice to have a snake with at least some red or orange tones. Thanks guys for your help. And I really hope someone learns from my stupid mistake if they read this.

Not a stupid mistake...you didn't know any better. Now you know. Unfortunately there will always be dishonest people out there that are willing to take advantage of those who do not know any better. Next go around, it'd be a really good idea to go to a reputable established breeder to seek out exactly what you want. If red is what you want, I would highly recommend Kevin Marter, or Kara & Ryan Norris. Both have been selectively breeding for beautiful red animals for a long time. I hope you still enjoy the snake you have, even just as a pet with a great temperament.

I just bought a pair of Bloods from Kara, and dealing with her was a breeze. She will stand by the health of her animals, and provides proof of lineage for every individual animal, including pics of the sire and dam, and support for the life of the pet.
No matter where you go to get your blood, color is never a guarantee as this is dependent on genetics, and also some of the environment as well. If the snake is not able to produce the specific proteins coding for the red pigmentation of the animal, then the pigment potentially will be altered, which is also why top quality food items and husbandry should be as close to perfect as possible. With that said, if your snakes comes from a line of very red parents, then the genetics are most likely in your favor.

My first blood was a dirt brown one. As he has aged, I have come to like how he has turned out. never bred him, never will he's just a pet. I have a nice blood or two, but my first dirt brown one seems to be my favorite .

Ya i heard alot of good things and was really looking into Kara's bloods. She has some beautiful animals that make me drool lol. I'm just very wary if shipping animals. Does anyone have a pictures of adults that they got from Kara? Are the babies usually red when they grow up? And anyone know if she has more babies coming this year? Sorry for all the questions, i just want to make sure i'm going to get a red animal if i go the the hassle of trying to returning the guy i have now. And thanks everyone for your help!
