Re: Have all the babies!! *Some graphic pics*

These little guys are growing out nicely, albeit a little slowly. I've got a bunch of BEW too, which is awesome!!! And I don't think any have been eaten, which is more than I can say about my regular rats lol. Though I don't think I could tell with so many hopping around.

Don't mind the dirty tub, I was in the middle of cleaning

Me too I think I'm gonna split the pure white ones off into a new colony, see if I can get a true breeding line.

That is an awesome number of babies, I'm must really be doing something wrong. I picked up 1.2 ASF's a few months ago and with the 3 litters I've had so far I've gotten 4, then 2, then 6 babies. Interesting thing is that while mine are good parents they're really calm and easy going and don't get at all upset when I handle the babies, which I've heard is NOT typical ASF behavior. I'm really liking these guys but my production has been dismal at best. Do you have any tips?

Hmm that does seem really low... Are you sure they're not eating them? What are you feeding them? And where did you get them/how old were they when you got them?

Yeah I just didn't kill off the high white ones One of my original breeders was pretty high white to start off with, so I think that helped.

They're eating the same thing my mice and rats eat and they seem to do fine, I've started including a handful of sunflower seeds to the mix to increase the protein levels. They were adults when I got them so I don't know how old they are. They're not crowded. They don't seem to be as dirty as the other rodents, and they don't seem to eat or drink as much either.

Sounds like they might be getting old. My older gals produce smaller litters until they eventually just stop altogether. I would try getting some new blood, or make a new colony with the babies you've produced so far. I get good production out of mine for about 8 months, then things start to taper off. I also supplement with extra protein and veggies, which I think helps (though I don't have any hard evidence of this lol).
