Honestly, if your snake is climbing all day, that's a sign of insecurity in the animal. He's looking for hiding places. If you have enough cover, a 40 is fine, as my boy's in a 40-gal with two hides with no issues as all, but ball pythons shouldn't be spending a lot of time cruising.
