Most of the time (not saying all of the time) an animal will kill only to continue its own life, whether it is defending itself from an enemy (or perceived enemy) or because it is hungry and needs to eat. Humans kill for fun (minus things like self defense, accidents (although why are you doing something that is so dangerous it could result in someone dying in the first place?) and for food), and I'm not just meaning murderers. Some people hunt just for skins or horns, and leave the meat behind. Personally, I trust animals a lot more than humans, even the dangerous ones like the big cats or venomous reptiles (although I would never have any of them) because I can trust them to act on their instincts. Humans... you can never really know...

Also on the subject of pets. I don't really see them as pets. To me, they are members of my family, which would make them no less or more important than my mom or dad or sisters.
Your not alone on this at all. I believe that any animals life is on the same level of importance/value as a humans. All of my pets are like members of my family as well. On August 10th 2013 I had to put my sweet dog Hossy to sleep. He was a 15 year old Bouvier Des Flanders/Golden Retriever mix. I got him when I was 2 years old and I just turned 18 August 5, so I really don't remember any moments in my life where he wasn't around. And with him gone it feels like a piece of my soul has gone with him and I would trade the lives of a million people just to spend on more day with him. I own reptiles as well and love them to death and they all got along very well with Hossy when he was alive. If I were living in an area where there were snakes large enough to kill my dog I'd never let my dog out of my site. Not saying its there fault at all. Even if they were there it might've still ended up badly but you never know.
