I'll be honest, I love my dog, but I find the lives of humans - even strangers and jerks - to be more significant. (yes, that means you! )Someone's pet being killed isn't news. My dog once killed someone's kittens. Not a damn article was written. (It still upset me, in case you want to know.)
I might be alone on this, but I don't picture a human's life as more than an animals. On the other end, an animal's isn't more important than a human's. In fact, I find that humans are the ones that forfeit that right most often. Most of the time (not saying all of the time) an animal will kill only to continue its own life, whether it is defending itself from an enemy (or perceived enemy) or because it is hungry and needs to eat. Humans kill for fun (minus things like self defense, accidents (although why are you doing something that is so dangerous it could result in someone dying in the first place?) and for food), and I'm not just meaning murderers. Some people hunt just for skins or horns, and leave the meat behind. Personally, I trust animals a lot more than humans, even the dangerous ones like the big cats or venomous reptiles (although I would never have any of them) because I can trust them to act on their instincts. Humans... you can never really know...
Also on the subject of pets. I don't really see them as pets. To me, they are members of my family, which would make them no less or more important than my mom or dad or sisters.
