Possible burn help
A lady who buys rats from me has a ball and she called me for help. She says her snake didn't shed right it came off in pieces and its belly is real red and bleeding in a spot. I asked her if it was just a little blood at the cloacae she said no its at the center of the snakes belly. I asked her how she heated the snake she said she had a heat pad she bought the snake and Accessories at petsmart. I asked her if she had the heat pad on a thermostat she said she had several things that tell the temp. She doesn't have a clue so I summised she has an thermometer and a wide open heat pad. I told her how to raise humidity to help future sheds and told her to give him a soak and put him in a damp towel or pillow case to remove the stuck shed. She did this and the shed came off. I also told her to turn off the heat pad until she gets a thermastat or rheostat and temp gun. She wants to bring her snake to me to look at what should I tell her to treat the burns with and how does she need to go about treating the burns.

Can't recommend without knowing the extent of the burn really.
It can be anything from cleaning up the area and keeping the animal on clean paper towel until the next shed to trip to the vet with course of antibiotic to prevent infection.
When an animal is burned stuck shed is really no longer a priority, and clean dry environment with limited stress is.

Re: Possible burn help
I just got all the stuck shed off for her and I'm going to put some betadine on the burn.

Re: Possible burn help
If you can, get some silver sulfadiazine cream. They're a prescription antibiotic cream for burns.
And keep her wound clean with betadine. Put her on paper towel substrate and a bare minimum set up for mean time. Have very little to no humidity until she goes into shed. Boost it up to normal for her to shed, then lower it again once she sheds. The burn doesn't look too bad. It should heal up fine with a few sheds.

Re: Possible burn help
I know I am not helping but that is really sad. She should've researched more about the pet before she got it. Poor her and her snake..

Snakes never bite me. Just humans.

On the same note... she bought the snake and supplies at Petsmart and most likely believed she got good information... unfortunate for the snake for sure, hopefully now being fully informed she will change the things that need to be.

The problem with pet stores like Petco and Petsmart, many will tell you that the heat pads do not need a thermostat. It even says on the heat pad packaging that no Tstat is required. So I can see how easily it is for snakes to get burned.
Its horrible and irresponsible....

I bought my first Ball Python from PetSmart (something I will never do again, even though she is an amazing snake)... not only did they get her age completely wrong, they were also feeding her the wrong prey size (way too small) and even didn't know if she was male or female!
They also told me that I don't even need a hydrometer or to mist the tank... luckily I did a lot of research and knew what to get, but it's horrible because a lot of people are getting bad information from "experts" at these chain stores. I hope the snake is doing better, poor thing
