I kept Beardies on sand for about a decade, and no issues at all. I've always been told no sand for them either, but I used it and it was great. And I fed them on the substrate, and they ate some, pooped out some, and spit out some.

Animals in the wild come into contact with sand regularly, but yet they continue to survive. Sure they don't live on it 24/7, but they also don't tell their prey to "please move to a nice sand free area so I can eat you" either.

And I'm pretty sure abusing is a strong word for something that's in no way abusive.
