Re: How do you keep a snake during the summer?

ok i will try to get a thermostat this weekend. but for the mean time i'll keep my heat mat off except at night but i'll keep it on a timer. since the temp in my house is around 85 during the day and cooler at night.

Sounds pretty good to me the only thing you should consider is making sure the snake looks healthy make sure you bring down the temperature on the cool side if the snake looks bad and also you might want to increase the hot side by getting an undertank heater

How do you keep a snake during the summer?

Ya but I spent $12 and it works perfectly fine. Just a curiosity, how many snakes do you keep? Do you have a separate thermostat on every enclosure? Or do you use racks?

Right now I have a combined 52lbs of snake meat to heat up, in 5 enclosures. So ya $30 for a cheapo t-stat in every separate enclosure is a huge waste of money for me. Just to feed my 3 adult females it costs $36/feeding. Not to mention the other 4.

If ambient temps stay stable, and you monitor your enclosures closely, there's no reason why a dimmer/rheostat won't work. They worked for decades before t-stats became so plentiful and cheap.

My snakes are really hot during the summer. There have been plenty of weeks that they were lucky if the cool side was under 85.

I would definitely pick up a dimmer until you get the thermostat. You can use the dimmer as a back up on the thermostat so it's not a total waste to have both! I have a dimmer as a back up on a couple of my on/off (rheostat) thermostats.

Re: How do you keep a snake during the summer?

I live in So Cal and have to run AC in the summer. I try to keep them in the low 80s during this time. Without it, the snake room gets well into the 90s.
