Friends Don't Let Friends Thread Necro
If you happen to be with you best bud and looking over thier shoulder as they surf their favorite forum, help them pay attention to the date and time stamp of the last post in a thread. If the post is really old, don't let them reply to it. Thread Necro can lead not only to the embarrassment and poking fun of your friend, but to that of others who now think that thread is new and relevant since it has been bumped to the top of the forum.
Exceptions can be made if they are the Thread Owner. Thread Owners can resurrect their own Threads should they have some sort of update that people might have been expecting.
The Public Service Announcement was brought to you by the Thread Paladins Alliance; Fighting Thread Necromancers since 2007.

I usually just make a new thread anyway, and just preface it with "sorry if this has been answered already, but..."

Re: Friends Don't Let Friends Thread Necro
It really doesn't bother me most of the time.
Unless they are using it to continue an argument of course - I like a quiet life.

It's a no-win situation. On the one hand...you get people asking questions that we've all answered hundreds of times...so they get told "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION!" So they do...and find an old thread that seems to help but doesn't quite do the job...so they reply to the thread, looking for more information. Then they get ridiculed for bumping an old thread.
I'd REALLY just like to see an end to both practices. Stop telling people to use the search function and just answer the danged question. And stop making fun of old thread bumps. Really, posting anything but something helpful on a "necro'ed" thread succeeds only in continuing the distracting disruptions and does nothing to actually HELP the site OR the people we claim to serve. It only makes us all look bad.

Friends Don't Let Friends Thread Necro
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Start a new thread with an old topic, get yelled at for not using the search.
Use the search and pull up an old thread, get old thread memes and pointed at.

I almost want to start a new thread type called "(insert username) Questions".
For instance, mine would be "Mephi's Herp Questions".
Any question I have goes on that thread. That way, I don't bug anyone with the necroing, I don't have to use the search (cause its not a new thread each time) AND I have a record of all the questions and concerns I've had over time.
Im just too lazy lol

THIS. Couldn't agree more. Wish I could like this more than once.
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.
