I use egg crate on top of the substrate yes .. I add so much water in there it pretty much makes a pool - just make sure the egg crate doesn't sink into the substrate and that eggs don't touch the substrate .. and make sure you seal the tub up with something like press-n-seal - the less ventilation the better, it keeps humidity high
