Ship Your Own Reptiles question
I dont exactly understand what SYR is? I buy everything to ship a snake or lizard then pay them to ship it? why do I need them? can't I just use fedex?

Ship Your Own Reptiles question
DON'T QUOTE ME:
Pretty sure you have to be licensed to use FedEx or whatever the states use to send live animals.
Ship your reptiles is licensed and is allowing people to use their license to ship animals.
Don't quote me as I've never shipped; but I think this is the answer. Haha

To ship live reptiles via Fed Ex, you must be Fed Ex "certified". This means that you must register for an account at Fed Ex, and (going from memory here) send them a mock shipment...i.e. you pack up a box like you were shipping it to a customer and send it to Fed Ex to examine. They make sure you know what you're doing and give you an account number. After that, I think you're good to go.
SYR cuts out all the dealings with Fed Ex. You register with them (SYR), and use their account. You enter the shipping info and print out a shipping label from your printer and you're good to go. The SYR website also has all the rules and regulations that must be followed when shipping live reptiles. You can't just slap a "From: To:" label on it and send it out the door. The SYR website walks you through all that.
Whatever method you choose, please do it right. If you ship a reptile via Fed Ex without being certified and you get caught, the hammer drops on us all. Same with SYR. They provide a valuable service to the reptile community that lots of folks, myself included, greatly appreciate. Breaking the rules puts that in jeopardy...
And the most important thing: If you send a snake in a sock, make sure it's a clean sock.

Also worth mentioning - unless Fedex has changed their TOS, even as a verified shipper through fedex for live animals, you can only ship to non-residential areas in full compliance. SYR gives you the ability to ship to residential or commercial. It's just much easier. . .

Only if you are certified by FedEx to ship live animals.

Re: Ship Your Own Reptiles question
I've also wondered how the shipping works. So if I register an account on SYR and they ship me the materials needed all I have to do is schedule a pick up by fed and that's that? I don't have to be "Fed Ex certified" ?

The info you need is all on the SYR website.

By using the ShipYourReptiles site, you will be shipping under our certification. By using the SYR service, you are agreeing to meet our Shipping Standards, including using a 3/4" insulated box (as a minimum) and following the temperature parameters.
We do offer other benefits like the to and from Residential shipping allowance, as well as our On-Time and Live Arrival Insurance coverage, the only offering of its kind in the industry.
To top it all off, our rates start at 20% the FedEx retail rate. It's a win-win all around : )
If you have never shipped before, check out our SYR Get Help section, and feel free to contact us with any questions. Your first time shipping can seem a bit daunting, but it is actually a straight forward and reliable process.
