    Rack/Tub questions

Ok, so while I've never used a rack system for snakes in my life, I'm going to be making the switch for the ball pythons that I'm getting.

I'd like to avoid sterilite tubs as if I'm not mistaken they are beveled around the edges at the bottom and have a little dip around the inside of the tub which causes the beveled outside bottom. It's hard to word it, but hopefully I've made myself clear, or I can post pictures. Is this with all sterilite, or just some? I know the vision tubs appeal to me the best but not all rack systems use the vision tubs.

I'm liking the 28/32 qt tubs, but if I got those, does vision sell a direct replacement to where I don't have to make any modifications.

Next question would be about if the tubs come with air holes in them or not. Then what ways do you find are best to put air holes. I've used a drill to put air holes in sterilite tubs when I had hundreds of scorpions, but they would feel kind of sharp. So what do you all use?

All the Sterilite tubs have that groove on the bottom. I use them for my adults and subadults. My hatchlings are all in vision tubs though with the flat bottom. I don't mind the groove, but I don't have a hot spot either so perhaps that's why.

If you dislike the groove I'd just but ARS or Vision tubs and have a rack made to fit those tubs.

As far as holes, I drill also. Make sure you use a plastic drill bit, and not a wood drill bit. The hole is much cleaner.

Best advice would be to reach out to the rack vendors that appeal to you. If you didn't know already there are two types of rack systems. Open and Closed air. Open is used for dedicated snake rooms (ambient is regulated) and Closed is used where you don't control ambiant. Get it right from the source, give the vendors a call.

I use a close rack system from Boaphile with the beveled edge tubs (1960) and was recently looking to buy new ones. While out, I did notice the ones on display (different sizes) all have said beveled edge. I use a specific tub for a specific application so I can't comment beyond that. You could go to their website (sterilite), there is plenty of information - dimensions, types and a really good list of stores that carry their products.

I drill my holes and sand them down. I never looked for any that come pre-drilled. I shop with blinders on. I hope it helps and best of luck.

Are you looking to buy a rack then use different tubs or are you going to be building your own?

Vision's V 35 Tubs are about the same size as a 28/32 qt tub but not exactly. ARS also makes nice tubs with flat bottoms. Their 50 series tubs are about the same size as well. Neither are direct replacements so I don't think they will work. They both do however make direct replacements for the IRIS CB-70 41 qt tub. The Vision V 70 and the ARS 70 series tubs should work with most racks designed for the IRIS CB 70 tub.

As for holes, you will have to do it yourself most likely. I prefer to use a cheap soldering iron to melt the holes in. I suggest you do this outside or in a well ventilated area. The other option is to drill the holes then use a deburring tool like this one:

I have used a wood burning tool for making holes and it works great. Good luck with the rack system...sorry I can't help with that part.

Well the rack would be pre built by C serpents as I really like his racks and they're recessed for the belly heat. I've been trying to communicate with him through email and Facebook, but his communication has been spotty at best, which is really turning me away from his customer service.

Anybody else know a good place to get rack systems that are quality and have recessed belly heat already installed.

There is a reason I haven't called them, and everything needs to be situated before I'd even be able to call them. Customer service is a big thing to me, especially emails, so to me that says a lot about a company. I always prefer to talk on the phone, but at the time it's not suitable because of the fact I'm on vacation and don't have a working phone, so I'm using WiFi. I'll have to try reptile basics, since I've communicated with them before si thanks for the recommendation.
