    herpstat and heaat tappee

Grabbed a herpstat 1 and had some prewire heattape sent over from RB. The herp was running at 92 for about 3 hours and the tapes actual reading with a gun was closer too 100 deg. The temp side of my tub (spaced about 1/4'' off tape") was about 90 and inside around 85 (papertowel substrate)

so questions... why is the heattape throwing 5+ deg over what i set the thermostat for ? Also should i go higher until i get 90-92 in the tub?

I don't know anything about anything, but where is the probe placed? That may have something to do with it.

What are you using to attach the probe?

Most temp guns aren't all that accurate, certainly less accurate than the herpstats probe is.

its sitting on top of the heat tape, nothing attached; i read using tape could cause hotter false readings.

It's a raytek i use at work, has to be +/-1

Actually they are, BUT they are not meant to be used on a shiny/reflective surface.

I would lean more toward probe placement, might try moving to a different location.

Could you put a tissue or some other very thin material over the tape, then recheck with the heat gun? That should hopefully give a truer reading. I totally forgot the "don't mix temp guns and shiny stuff' rule. I ready the glass on our lizard's tank just for giggles and it was 120 lol.

Sounds like someone has covered their probe with a tape or something that is holding heat.

Not the cheap ones used in the hobby, most are just as bad as an accurate, +/- 2 to +/- 4 depending on the exact model.

Reflective surfaces will only make it worse.

But I agree, that probe placement is a likely culprit.

how should i be attatching the probe? also for tub setup i grabbed an acurite indoor/outdoor with humidity. Do you put on in every tub or am i good with monitoring a single tub, then doing heatgun checks periodically.

Also how are you running those wires?
