It's complicated in terms of time signatures. Most of Tool's music is done in both shifting and unusual meters.

Like the song "Money" by Pink Floyd. It was written in 7/4 and then somewhere in the song it switches to 4/4. Switching that in the middle of the song can be very tricky. I think... I'm not really a music person, so idk. I'm just going off what i think i know.

I was discussing this with a friend on Facebook, he said depending on how your playing it, it isn't all that complicated. I am a vocalist and don't really know how to play any instruments cept for bass guitar and that is by ear. I don't know chords on the bass but I also never tried to play a Tool song niether. I guess I just don't know enough about playing music over just writing and singing lyrics. Like Andrew Schwab said in his book "Its all down hill from here" guitar center needs a section just for vocalist to chill out to read or write or play video games...

I do know and understand that a lot of Tool is very in depth and layered music wise which makes it heavy in a whole different since of the word heavy.

This thread is a little aged, but I'm gonna throw in my .02 anyway.

If by complicated, you mean difficult, then no their songs usually aren't hard at all (at least for guitar players). They can get a little tricky because they usually have a lot of different parts, each with their subtle differences so it can be a lot to keep track of.

The whole time signature thing has never been a problem for me (and believe me....I'm not a fantastic guitar player) because I don't really pay attention to it. As long as I've got the bpm correct it's basically just focusing on the riff at hand and trying not to lose yourself in between all the changes.

The real trick is finding a drummer that can mimic Danny Carey...
