That's exactly what I do. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like trying to feed my girls larger meals early in the year to start putting weight on early kicks them right off feed. Feeding adult balls (and some subadults) by weight has never worked for me. They gain and maintain fine going by girth. Sometimes I offer twice a week, sometimes I don't. I've found increasing food when they start building follicles, when their feeding response ramps up, also tells me where they really are in their cycle. Not just where I'd like them to be.
