So I covered one side of the tank last night with a blanket, and turned the heating pad up to high. That seemed to help. The temp on the cool side stayed about 75/76.

If you are comfortable with that, you could make that part of your nightly routine. You can also experiment with position of your heating pad or using your heat emitter, but I'd definitely take the little guy out while you see how warm the heat emitter gets it in there to make sure you're not going to overheat him.
