Wanting to upgrade enclosure for my BCI

We don't mean to be unfriendly, but if you're going to be a part of an on-line herp community, there's a couple of things you should probably know.....

First, many of us DO keep "lots of snakes". I myself have 17 and there are quite of few here who have a LOT more than that - upwards of 50-60 or even in the 100's. Those of us with "lots" of snakes would like to know why you think that's not a good idea. We are hobbyists, ecologists, and breeders and having lots of snakes is the norm, not the unusual.

Second, a light inside the cage isn't going to protect us one bit. The cages we've been talking about here have large clear doors that let in a lot of natural light and/or light from the room. We can easily see into these cages without an added light. There is never any question as to where our snakes are in the cage or to what mood they are in.

Third, while some of us here do keep hots and do take plenty of added precautions when dealing with them, this particular forum, and specifically this thread, is in reference to boa constrictors. These are naturally docile, curious, and tame snakes that are non-venomous. The risk when dealing with boas is vastly minimal.

Fourth, snakes do not require lights in their enclosures. They are not like lizards and don't need UVB light for metabolic growth. Humidity is more necessary to a snake's well-being and lights are notorious for damaging the delicate balance of humidity in their enclosures. This is why many hobbyists/breeders do not recommend lights. Some of us do choose to use lights, but more for aesthetics than because it is strictly necessary.

Lastly, welcome to the forums! I urge you to browse around and get to know some of us. We are a friendly and open group, although sometimes overzealous and passionate, lol. This is a wonderful place to learn and while browsing our forums, I hope you can keep that in mind.

Yes, light does not protect you. Not smelling like food does.

I like lights for looks primarily, and to help with cleaning. My fella is in a basement so I do go 12 hrs light, 2-3 hrs Moonlight (sometimes) then black.

But most of the REAL keepers here have their own system.

Opinions are fine and welcome, however its usually best to relate them in some way to the thread (my opinion LOL!).

My 2 snakes are the easiest pets I've ever owned. Love our dogs, but they are not "leave alone" animals.
