Feeding size.. a little too big okay?

Last week I fed my ball python a hopper mouse at 12 grams and it seemed rather small. My spider ball was 92 grams when I took him home and he looked thinner then he does now. After that meal he plumped up a bit. I went to buy another mouse today and the hoppers seemed smaller then usual. So I got an f/t adult mouse at 20 grams. Is this to big? It took him longer to eat but he got it down fine.

If you're on a 7 day feeding schedule it shouldn't be an issue. Just don't make prey being 20% of the animal's weight a constant habit. Some say it's really hard to over feed a baby ball python. They digest pretty fast at that age.

In most cases if the food is way to big they wont eat it. Ive never had a snake choke, although I suppose it could happen. Just go with a food iteam that seems good for his size you may even try feeding him rat pups so he doesnt get stuck on mice. I fed all my young ones 2 rat pups a week.

I don't think they can choke. The opening of their windpipe is at the front of their mouth.

I did something I shouldn't have and fed my 350ish gram mojave a rat that was probably pushing 100g. I didn't realize how big the rat was until after the snake took it down. It left a sizeable lump but she digested it OK and is fine.

I really should have payed more attention and not let this happen, but it did, and she is OK.

In a situation like that I don't worry too much. I try to keep it as close to what it should be as I can, but I figure in the wild they don't exactly whip out a scale and weigh their prey.

Thanks everyone. The hoppers were to small and the adult mouse was kind of big. I usually buy small adult mice which is like a inbetween but they were recalled.

I always aim for prey that leaves a visible lump, but I'm bad at judging size and usually end up getting her something smaller.
Nothing bad's happened too far when she gets a big one, she's just growing fast. I wouldn't keep feeding her like that when she's adult though.
