I custom built my computer, and I can easily walk you through the process. It's not hard, the most annoying for me is always figuring out how to hide the wires, or run them in the cleanest way. If you buy a pre-built you pay for way more then what any computer shop would charge you to assemble it. When I built pc's for people I charge about $75, unless they want to start adding water cooling or stuff of that nature.

I spent about $2500 on my computer, but that's because I bought the GTX Titan, which was $1000, so take that off and it's at $1500, but I'll give you my specs.

Core i7-2700k 3.5 ghz quad core processor(3.9 turbo boost, though I have mine set for 4.2)
    Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Mobo
    16gb(2x 8GB) G-skill ripjaw DDR3 1600/PC3 12800
    256GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD
1TB Western Digital, or it may be Seagate, no idea.
CM Storm Sniper Case(full size tower, 3x 200mm fans, 4x 120mm fans all together in case)
Corsair H80i(self contained water cooler, with 2x 120mm fans for push/pull combo)
    LG DL DVD-RW
    EVGA GTX Titan Superclocked
    Rosewill Bronze series 1000W Powersupply

Take off the SSD which is about $230, and the vid card which is $1000, and that's roughly 1200ish, but the corsair h80i was about $90, the psu was 150+ I think. Then I over did the ram, and the case was $110 or something like that. You can do an i5 quad core or different i7 quad core and still go under $1000. If anybody has any computer questions ever, feel free to shoot them my way.

    EDIT:
That was also my monitor figured in there. I only got a 24" cause I run three monitors.
