Walm-Mart, $2 for 4. A couple minutes with a dremel and a butane torch and they're awesome hides. Unfortunately my girls are outgrowing them, but I'll hang on to them for the next generation.

Ditto. I was going to suggest the same. The flash can severely wash out color and give a false sense of the snake being much lighter or more yellow. Natural light with no flash is best. Or, try to take on a solid back, or solid white background.

I am a believer than a heterozygous gene can make animals carrying them seem to stand out differently than true "normals" that lack any other genes. But I do not believe that it's a tell-all.

I'll get some of those type of pics eventually, but for now I need to just leave her alone. She seems to have been severely stressed by the move, hasn't shown any interest in food yet, and is really shy and twitchy.

She finally ate and calmed down enough for me to handle her and take her outside... of course, as soon as we got outside she got REALLY squrimy and curious. Lol.

If I recall a BP.net member was working on a line of green snakes and they too would just not show the green in photo's.
Hopefully, he or she sees this thread and can share info that may be relevant.

Regardless, it's going to be interesting to see what she produces eventually. She's finally coming out of her shell and getting used to being handled. To me these are pets too, not just investments. I really wouldn't want a BP that I couldn't handle fairly regularly.

Yes; i personally think its more of a psychological thing, color perception. That doesnt mean its not real. As pigments, being less conservative, i think we have at most 4 pigments in BPs: white, yellow, brown, and black. Maybe brown is just a mix of yellow and black, then, looking at some high-contrast albinos, maybe we do have a true brown pigment. Transparency, when all pigments are low, can lead to pink/purple/lavender hues.

But when you show people these oranges and whites and browns and blacks and greys all day, their expectations adapt, and in that mindset you can get something where the people consistently see green while it is part of the regular color spectrum. Just the right intensity of brown with comparatively unsually low yellow-content, and people see green because their mind exaggerates the absence of yellow. Thats just my opinion, my personal explanation for it. In a way it is real, because depending on peoples expectations of ball python color, you do need a very special color tone for the effect to be consistently experienced by people looking at the snake. I suspect absence of yellow and presence of the right brown are key.


And while i think i have a rational explanation for it, i to a degree see it in pictures, while not believing in a green pigment at work. For me its just a specific kind of brown that does it and when i look at different actual greens the effect gets weaker; its still something unusual.

It really is all about perception. If it's a perceptibly different color, and it's reproduceable, then it should be pursued. I wouldn't even be messing with it if I wasn't told that several of the others in the clutch had the same odd coloration.

And, of course, it's not even really about the subtle difference in color from an average normal. If there's a Superform then who knows? It might turn out to be cool, or it might turn out to be nothing. There are plenty of minor variations that have an insane superform.

Definitely some interesting similarities. Mine has the belly pattern and the general greenish hue, but it doesn't seem to have the faded spots. Also, mine has quite a bit more blushing on the back.

I posted in that thread, we'll see if he comes back and comments on it.
