    Humidity/Shedding

I have had my baby for a few months now and the whole time she has not shed, and her eye caps look cracked. I am not sure if that's because of an incomplete shed from before I got her or if my humidity is too low- I spray water on the substrate and re-wet the washcloths I have hanging on the sides every day but that all dries out pretty quickly under the heat lamp and UV light. Right after I re-wet everything the humidity is around 85%, but by the time I get home the next day it's around 40-50%. I know the humidity should be higher and I do have a humid hide but she never goes in there, she's never even checked it out to my knowledge. Does anyone know additional ways to raise the humidity in her tank? Also, should I be worried about the eye caps or her not shedding for a few months? Thanks for your help!

Having regular humidity of 40-50% is good. That mixed with times of 85% your snake should shed fine. You say baby but what is its actual age? Have you noticed the signs of shed without ever shedding?

The eye caps will come off with the next shed or your can try to gently rub it loose with your finger. If you can run your finger down and hit the edge of the cap they will pop off. Don't apply pressure to the eye.

To answer your questions- I do not know for sure how old she is; I got her a few months ago and she was around 2ft then so I assumed she was less than a year old. The guy I got her from had her for a few months and had gotten her from Petco, which sells BPs at 2-3 months old. He said she had shed once before and it went fine, but doesn't remember how long ago. I think she is going into shed because I noticed a few places on her look whitish and flaky, kind of like dry skin on humans, and her whole body has a subtle blue sheen that wasn't there before.

As for her eye caps, I think I'll wait to see if they come off in this shed, and if not then I'll try the ol' wet pillowcase trick.

Is there any way I can get her to go into her humid hide once she starts to really shed? She just really likes her log and never leaves it.

Put damp moss in the log. A log is not really a good hide for a ball. A tight hide with one door is preferred. Many types of these are available and they will create a good humid hide when damp moss is added.

If your humid hide is made of a Tupperware like container that has a clear bottom, the bottom may be the reason it is not being used. Try piling substrate around the bottom of the container to black out the inside of the container.

These are nice and cheap. Easy to clean and stack so you can keep extras.
