    I am just sick :(

So I posted a while back about my crested female that laid an egg about 96 days ago. I've been checking it weekly, but it incubated at about 70-72 degrees, so didn't know when yo expect anything. Friday my little sister was admitted to the hospital and I've been in and out of the house, but spent last night at the hospital. The egg hasn't been on my mind, especially since she had never been with a male to my knowledge and I figured it was infertile. I kept hope for it though. Went to check it tonight and noticed it a little deflated with some goo coming out. It leaked goo about a month ago, but it sealed up. It also stunk a little bit so i figured it finally went bad. It did grow fungus on the outside when it leaked goo the first time but the fungus died off. Well I pick the egg up and there are little slits in the side. I peel egg back and inside is a 100% developed and beautiful full pinstripe baby...but it was dead. I am just sick because I figure it either couldn't get out of the egg because maybe my humidity wasn't right or it suffocated because I had not been opening the lid of the container. I feel like a terrible person and I am so sick with myself right now.

Sorry for this unfortunate experience. Take away what knowledge you can, and best of luck next time.

There was another thread on here just recently where this happened. Its pretty common especially if its your first time incubating. It can be due to humidity. I'd recommend incubating with Repashy Superhatch next time so you can visually inspect the substrate to figure out if you need to add moisture. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about it, just learn from the experience as much as you can so you don't repeat it. It also could be the case that everything was perfect and that a eggtooth randomly snapped before he could get out, meaning its no fault of yours whatsoever. Best of luck with the rest of the season.

I took the other egg out, changed the hatchrite and put it back in. She laid 2 more eggs 33 days ago. One went yucky and I tossed it. The other one plumped out and still looks good. She obviously has sperm to fertilize the first egg, could the last batch of eggs laid be fertile as well? i hope I have another chance. The breeder I got her from told me he had virgin females lay fertile eggs. Could this have been the case, or likely retained sperm? I candled the remaining egg. Couldn't yell if I saw anything, buy I didn't think I saw anything in the first egg either. I'm just sad. Thanks everyone for your help.

I had a leo egg develop all the way and then ended up with a dead baby. Not sure what happened or why, but I didn't beat myself up, as I don't know if I was at fault or not. Better luck with the one that you have incubating still!
