Make sure the UTH isn't too hot now. Is it regulated by a thermostat?

I don't think you should be too hard on yourself. It is a lesson in internet advice though. After a while you will get a feel for when your snake is going into shed. The colors and shine of the skin change and in my experience they're only 'snappy' once their eyes have a distinct blueish white hue to them.
